One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band
The
Preservation Hall Jazz Band is an essential in understanding American
culture. Based out of The Preservation Hall in the heart of the New
Orleans’ French Quarter, the PHJB serves up a whopping dose of
traditional dixieland jazz. It’s the sound of a community and a culture
bursting with polyphonic excitement: tuba snorting, trumpet blazing and
clarinet soaring. It’s not a revival because hot jazz never died in New
Orleans and it’s not an homage; this is a group of seasoned veterans
carrying forth the traditional at the very root of North American jazz
as we now understand it. It’s not a history lesson, it’s an opportunity
to hear life-affirming music that has served as the backbone of so many
communities for over 70 years. If you have love to share or you need a
reminder of how wonderful humanity can be, be there when the saints go
marching in.
